Khalid Shatta
Visual Artist — Oslo
Khalid Shatta is a Sudanese-Norwegian artist originating from the Nuba Mountains in Sudan, currently based in Oslo.
Across photography, installation, drawing, painting, and sculpture, Shatta’s practice is informed by modernist painting and the visual cultures of ancient civilizations, with an emphasis on Sudanese heritage. He engages with cultural memory, representation, and histories shaped by displacement and colonialism. He is working on two ongoing projects: The Migration of the Soul and Gods in Action.
The sensation of being out of place. We live in a time where many people feel a disconnection from their own bodies and existence. I make use of ancient Kemetic and Cushitic symbols from the historical kingdoms of the Nile valley civilisations. I believe that everything is connected through our shared history, even in this chaotic state of migration. Khalid Shatta — The Migration of the Soul
The Migration of the Soul
The sensation of being out of place. We live in a time where many people feel a disconnection from their own bodies and existence.
I believe in trying to uncover the cultural heritage we lost under Islamic conquest and European colonialism.
